When it comes time for the playoffs, it become Ruddy time.
When Whiteford made its run into the Division 8 semifinals last year, quarterback Shea Ruddy had four consecutive 100-yard rushing games in the postseason. He was at it again Friday, rushing for 140 yards – the first time all season he cracked the 100-yard rushing marker in a game.
“He had some unbelievable runs tonight,” Whiteford coach Todd Thieken said. “They were really impressive. He’s so athletic and good in that situation.”
Some were called runs, but he also had a scramble. He dropped back to pass, stepped into a collapsing pocket, briefly seemed to disappear into a group of linemen, then somehow broke free and went 43 yards for a touchdown.
“I saw an opening,” Ruddy said. “I knew I had to get outside. They always run me more in the playoffs. They know I can run I guess and they can use me like another (running) back.”
Ruddy is Whiteford’s all-time passing leader but also has more than 2,000 career rushing yards. He has accounted for 79 touchdowns in his career – 51 passing and 28 rushing. His 18 TD passes this season is a single season Whiteford record.
