OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford opened the track and field season Thursday with a 97-40 win over Ida in the boys meet and dropping a close 71-61 match on the girl’s side.
“Overall, the meet was a success,” said Whiteford coach Jay Yockey. “We saw what we can do with just a few weeks’ worth of work in and now we’ll continue to roll and improve like we should.”
In the boys meet, Whiteford swept the relays and won all of the running events from the 400 on up, plus the two hurdle events.
Shea Ruddy won the high jump and Jake Iott the 400. Ryin Ruddy won the 300 hurdles and Stepan Masserant was the pole vault winner. Kolby Masserant won the long jump with Zach Kahn winning the 800, Elliott Rodgers the 1600 and Keegan Masters the 3200. Seamus Waterford captured the 110 hurdles.
“We had a great first showing for the boys,” Yockey said. “There really are a lot of great things we did, and things we need to work on for the coming meets. But overall, I am pleased with how tonight’s meet went for our first of the season.”
In the girl’s dual meet, Madelyn Thomas won the 200 and 400 and was part of two winning relays. Ali Bauman won the pole vault and Annie Gapp the 300 hurdles.
“The girls team put up a great effort as well. We fell short by only 10 points but missed out on points for not having some girls in few events,” Yockey said. “We have potential to see progress in all of our events.”
