Whiteford ends Madison’s 107 dual-meet winning streak

By DOUG DONNELLY

OTTAWA LAKE – The longest winning streak in Tri-County Conference history came to a halt Tuesday when the Whiteford Bobcat girls track and field team edged Madison 70-67.

It’s Madison’s first TCC dual-meet loss since 2006. The Trojans had won 107 consecutive dual meets.

“The meet kept going back and forth,” said Whiteford coach Jay Yockey. “I knew Madison was going to come to compete. They are a solid and strong program, but our girls were determined to show them how strong we are.”

The Bobcats improved to 3-0 in the TCC, which includes victories over Morenci and Erie Mason.

Madison took first in nine of the 17 events.

“Depth was an issue,” Madison coach Josh Powers said. “(Whiteford) coach Yockey and his staff have done a tremendous job getting kids to run track. They were well prepared and outperformed us.”

The two teams were neck-and-neck throughout the meet, which went on despite rain for much of the day.

For Madison, Jillian Kendrick took the 200 (28.09) and 400 (1:05.86). Ashlyn Hill was first in the 3200 (15:04.92) while Tatum Wilson edged Gapp in the 300 hurdles and won the high jump. Halle Horwath was first in the pole vault and Kaylee Paulette first in the long jump for the Trojans.

The teams split the relays with the Trojans taking the 800 and 1600 and the Bobcats winning the 400 and 3200.

Annabelle Gapp was a double winner, taking the 1,600 and high hurdles to lead the Bobcats.

Mackenzie Ulery won the 100 meters (13.44) and ran on the winning 400 relay and Alaina McClain ruled the 800 and was part of the winning 3,200 relay.

The Bobcats also got wins from Haley Luse in the shot-put and Kenzie Gray in the discus.

Madelyn Thomas, Aubrie Simmons, Alena Ellis and Jessica Ulery also had impressive performances.

Madison is leaving the TCC at the end of the season. They still have a streak of 15 consecutive TCC championships. The league champion won’t be decided until the league meet in May.

“It’s a sweet victory as they’re leaving the TCC this year,” Yockey said. “It adds fuel to the fire and determination to our team to continue to compete well. These girls have a lot of guts in them, and they surprise me every meet.”

Yockey said the weather hasn’t cooperated this spring for anyone.

“The weather this spring hasn’t been anyone’s friend, but I told them that champions show up in all circumstances,” he said.

Whiteford’s last win over Madison in TCC track was 2004.

Whiteford boys beat Madison 81-56.

Shea Ruddy won the 100 and high jump while Keegan Masters took the 800 and 3200.

Other wins were from Jake Iott (400), Ryin Ruddy (low hurdles), Stepan Masserant (pole vault) and Kolby Masserant (long jump).

The Bobcats are in first place in the TCC in both the boys and girls dual-meet standings.

Erie Mason’s boys beat Sand Creek 122-14 and Morenci 85-51 Tuesday while the Mason girls beat Sand Creek 95.5-40.5 and Morenci 94-42.

Whiteford will compete at the Webberville Invitational on Friday and face a TCC dual against Britton Deerfield and Morenci Tuesday at Morenci.
