Whiteford 2-1 before rain ends tournament

GRAND BLANC – Whiteford’s softball team saw some new competition and won two games Saturday at the 31st annual Michigan Stars Softball Tournament in Grand Blanc.

The Bobcats went 2-1 on Saturday. Sunday’s games were canceled due to rain.

Whiteford beat Division 1 North Farmington 5-0, lost to Division 3 Algonac 4-0, then rebounded to beat Lakeland 2-1.

The Bobcats were seeded seventh heading into Sunday’s action, which was wiped out.

Unity Nelson won both games in the circle, striking out 25 batters along the way. She had the game-winning RBI against Lakeland, which was won on an international tiebreaker. Karlie Conard had eight strikeouts in the game she pitched. Aly VanBrandt was Whiteford’s leading hitter.

“Our pitchers threw well,” Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt said.
