Championship Time! Bobcats head to big weekend of spring sports

By DOUG DONNELLY

The first Saturday in June has long been known as one of the biggest prep sports days of the season and this year is no different.

Whiteford’s baseball and softball teams will compete for district titles on their home diamonds and the Bobcat track and field teams have a dozen competitors seeking state glory and all-state honors at the state track meet.

BASEBALL

The Bobcat baseball team will take on 18-16 Blissfield at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The winner plays the Erie Mason-Monroe SMCC winner in the finals.

Whiteford is 18-10 after losing to Bedford on Wednesday in the regular season finale. The Bobcats are seeking their third straight and 18th all-time district title.

SOFTBALL

The 31-4 Bobcats are the favorite in this all-Monroe County district. Whiteford plays Ida in the first game. Erie Mason and SMCC meet next with the winners competing for the district crown after.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

The Bobcat boys are looking to make some noise at the state meet with a strong contingent of athletes competing.

Shea and Ryin Ruddy both will have four events on Saturday. Shea is in the 100 and 400 as well as two relays. Ryin will run in three relays, plus the 300 Hurdles.

Jake Iott will run in the 400 and two relays.

Stepan Masserant will compete in the pole vault and with the 400 Relay team. Kolby Masserant is in both the 400 relay and the long jump.

Two-time Regional champion Keegan Masters will be in the 1600 and 3200. Teammate Elliott Rodgers will also run the 3200.

Dylan Anderson is in the 800 and 1600 relays while Cooper Bieber is also in the 800 relay.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

First-year track athlete Mackenzie Ulery qualified for states in the 100 while Anne Gapp will run in the 300 Hurdles.
