Shea Ruddy will be in a new position when he plays in the Michigan High School Coaches Association All-Star Game Saturday.
The Whiteford graduate started four years at quarterback for the Bobcats, setting mountains of school records, earning All-State honors and winning a state championship as a senior. He committed in the fall to Hillsdale College, where he expects to play slot receiver. That’s the position he’s listed on the roster for the All-Star game that will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Tech University.
“I never saw myself as a quarterback in college,” Ruddy said. “I was recruited as either a wide receiver or defensive back. I think I’m more suited as wide out for college.”
Ruddy is one of three Monroe County athletes scheduled to play in the All-Star game. The others are Ben Przytula of Gibraltar Carlson and Owen Yount of Monroe. Two players from Lenawee County will also play – Easten Strodtman of Hudson and Brandon Felts of Clinton.
Ruddy will also have some familiar faces on the sidelines with him in Whiteford head coach Todd Thieken and Bobcat offensive coordinator Ben Avis, both of whom are on the East coaching staff.
“It’s exciting to get to play with all of these guys,” Ruddy said. “It’s a cool memory for my career for sure.”
This past spring Ruddy tried track for the first time and qualified for the state meet in four events. He finished second in the 400 and he helped the 1,600 relay team win a state championship.
Yount had 309 receiving yards for the Trojans this past season while Przytula was a four-sport star at Carlson, earning all-state honors in football, wrestling, and track.
The coaches association will hold its hall of fame induction ceremonies Friday. The game is at Lawrence Tech University in Southfield for the third consecutive season.
