Whiteford reaches second round with district opener victory

BLISSFIELD — Whiteford defeated Blissfield in three sets Monday, 31-29, 25-19, 25-19, to advance to the Division 3 district semifinals.

The Bobcats led in the first set 19-10, before the Royals came back and pushed the game to 29-29 before Whiteford closed out the win.

“Our defense was relentless tonight,” Bobcat coach Janie Bunge said. “We were definitely out for revenge and I don’t think there was any doubt we were going to win that set. We had the control, we just needed to finish, which has been a constant theme for us this year.

“It felt good to finally see them get the feeling of finishing.”

Annabelle Gapp led the Bobcats in kills with 8 while Kenzie Gray and Bailey Spradling had seven each. Gray had three serving aces.

Liv Ruehle had 40 digs and two aces. Anna Schober had 30 assists.

The Bobcats improved to 15-19-3. They will take on No. 1 ranked Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in Wednesday’s district semifinal.

Blissfield’s season ends at 13-27-1.
