IDA – Whiteford’s defense held Ida to just two three pointers and two free throws in the second half and beat the Bluestreaks on the road for a 2-0 start.
The last time the Bobcats started 2-0 was 2011-12.
“Our defense led the way,” Whiteford coach Nick Brillhart said. “I’m very proud of how mentally tough our team has been to start the season.”
Whiteford was also without Emily Rasor, the team’s top returning scorer.
“Our girls responded well to adversity,” said Brillhart, in his first year as the Bobcat coach.
Whiteford jumped out to a 13-10 lead as Emily Hill scored 9 points in the first eight minutes. She finished with 14 points, five steals and two assists.
Annabelle Gapp had 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Ida’s Jessica Schrader scored 13 points for the game while Kayla Leighty contributed 11. Five of Ida’s 10 field goals were 3-pointers.
Whiteford, who last beat Ida Oct. 9, 1990, returns home on Monday to host Jefferson in a non-league matchup.
Ida (1-1) hosts Hillsdale Tuesday in the LCAA opener.
