Whiteford wins two one-run games in softball tournament

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford won a pair of nailbiters Saturday in its own invitational.

The Bobcats beat Chelsea 3-2 in eight innings in the first game. The Bobcats scored in the bottom of the eighth inning with the International tie-breaker in effect. Koralynn Billau had the walk-off single that scored Karlie Conard from second base.

In the second game, Shay Alexnader’s double in the seventh inning gave the Bobcats a 3-2 win over Clinton, ranked in the top 10 of the most recent Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association rankings.

Jillian Webb led off the seventh with a single and moved to second on an Ava Wood sacrifice. Alexander’s double ended the game.

Alexander hit an inside-the-park-home run earlier in the game, slamming a ball that the Clinton rightfielder dove for and missed. The ball went all the way to the fence and Alexander scooted home to score.

Unity Nelson was the winner in the first game with Conard picking up the victory in Game 2.

“We’re so proud of this group – they never quit,” Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt said. “They work so hard in practice and just refuse to give up in games. They always compete.”

The 14-4 Bobcats host Saline Tuesday.
