MADISON TOWNSHIP – Whiteford’s boys track and field team repeated as regional champions Saturday with a stunning performance at the Division 3 regional at Madison.

Kenzi Gray won the shot put. Reagan Wing set a school record by clearing 8-9 in the pole vault and will compete at the state finals. Rylie DeSilvis went 15-7 in the long jump to join here at the state meet along with Nina Bauman (discus), Alaina McClain (800).

The boys had an outstanding day.

“This season has had many ups and downs with injuries, terrible weather, and many other things,” Whiteford coach Jay Yockey said. “But winning the regional title for the boys and getting boys and girls to the state meet is the cherry on top of the cake.”

The 4×800 Relay set the tone for the day by setting a school record with Nate Andrews, Jakub Diesing, Brek Ruddy and Zach Kahn.

All four relays qualified for the state meet.

The 4×100 consists of Antonio Nachtrab, Jess Saylor, Ryin Ruddy and Kolby Masserant. The 4×200 is Gaspare Pirrone, Brody Hillard, Nachtrab and Liam Waterford. The 4×400 Relay, which took first place, is Andrews, Brek Ruddy, Saylor and Ryin Ruddy.

Keegan Masters was regional champion in the 800 and 1600. Stepan Masserant won the pole vault with a school record 14-3. Kolby Masserant won the long jump.

Other state qualifiers are Jess Saylor in the 400 and Ryin Ruddy in both hurdles.

“Ryin Ruddy did an amazing thing by qualifying for four events again,” Yockey said. “He is just a force to be reckoned with on the track.”

It’s the third regional championship in school history. The Bobcat boys also took first in a Division 4 regional in 2007 and last year was a D3 champion.

Eighteen Bobcats will compete at the state meet in Kent City on June 1.

“We had a lot of performances stand out,” Yockey said. “As a coach it just is the best thing to watch these kids get better than their seeds and hit the marks they’ve been working towards.”
