Once again, Airport High School will be the epicenter of high school basketball in the Monroe County Region this weekend – and Whiteford’s boys and girls basketball teams will be part of the action.
Airport will host six games Friday and six games Saturday in the 11th annual Airport Jets Basketball Showcase Event.
Games begin at 10 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.
Ida and Flat Rock girls tip off the day Friday, followed by Gibraltar Carlson playing Jefferson, then Whiteford taking on New Boston Huron – also in girls basketball. Jackson Lumen Christi will take on Lake Leelanau St. Mary in a girls game at approximately 3:15 with Airport’s boys playing Lake Leelanau at 5 p.m. The girls return to the court at 6:45 with Woodhaven taking on Monroe and Airport hosting South Lyon East.
On Saturday, Airport’s girls will make the quick turnaround and play Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s at 9 a.m.
The remainder of Saturday’s games are all boys games – Jefferson playing Lake Leelanau St. Mary at 10:30 a.m., Livonia Churchill playing Dundee at 12:15 p.m.; Plymouth Salem playing New Haven at 2 p.m.; Ypsilanti Arbor Prep playing Saline at 3:45 p.m.; Tecumseh taking on Flat Rock at 5:30 p.m.; Carlson taking on Monroe at 7 p.m. and Airport playing Whiteford at 8:45 p.m. in the final game of the night.
Whiteford’s boys are playing Airport for the first time in school history.
“I like to play over the break, so we don’t get rusty during the holidays,” Whiteford coach Nick Abalos said. “I’m looking forward to playing Airport. We are looking to bounce back after a tough out against Bedford. We have a good group of athletes that are eager to improve.”
In boys games not at Airport, Royal Oak Shrine will visit SMCC at 3 p.m. Friday and Flat Rock will play at the Farmington Showcase Saturday at 3 p.m. against Walled Lake Northern.
Also in boys basketball, Summerfield will play Morenci at 4 p.m. Saturday at the University of Michigan. Bedford is at Holt in the Holt Holiday Showcase at 3 p.m. Holt returns the favor Jan. 2 when they travel to play Bedford.
