OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford grabbed a quick lead in overtime when Addeson Cousino scored on a short jumper and never trailed again, knocking off the previously unbeaten Bulldogs.
“That is the best defense we have played since I have been here,” Bobcat coach Nick Brillhart said. “To beat a team of that caliber, especially this late in the season, is huge for our kids.”
The 13-7 Bobcats led early 5-0 and were never behind by more than four points all night. Emily Hill gave Whiteford a 36-33 lead with 46.9 seconds remaining in overtime. Morenci pulled within a point with 23 seconds left but Whiteford never lost possession of the ball the rest of the game.
Brooklyn Mills scored a season-high 13 points. Wood had eight rebounds.
Brillhart praised the atmosphere at the game as well.
“That was the best student section we’ve had since I can remember,” he said. “The crowd was really into it. It was a great night.”
Morenci, who already has secured the Tri-County Conference championship, falls to 18-1. They came into the game ranked No. 4 in Division 4.
