Whiteford, Welch win first of season

Whiteford picked up its first win of 2025 Friday, beating Airport 7-1.

Freshman Peyton Welch struck out 14 for the Bobcats, who are 1-2 on the season.

This was Airport’s first game of the season, Whiteford started their season 0-2 with lopsided losses against Flat Rock and Sylvania Northview.

The Bobcats had nine hits in the game. A six-run sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie.

The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Lily Billau following a 7-pitch at-bat that drove in three.

Brooklyn Mils, Ava Stevens, and Addeson Cousino each collected two hits for Whiteford.

“We had great dugout energy and simply put the ball and play tonight,” Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt said. “Welch was dialed in and was able to keep them off balanced. That is a very good Airport team – and we know it was their first game of the season. Our scrimmages and our games prior to today definitely helped determine tonight’s outcome.”
