Bobcats reach Tier 2 Finals of Michigan Challenge Tournament

CANTON – Whiteford reached the Tier 2 Division finals of the Michigan Challenge Tournament that began Friday and continued into Sunday, going 4-0-1.

The Bobcats defeated Wyandotte Roosevelt 11-7 Friday, beat North Farmington 9-6 and Pinckney 6-5 Saturday and beat Boyne City 10-1 on Sunday before tying Ida 9-9 in the Tier 2 championship game Sunday.

The Bobcats came from behind several times over the weekend.

Roosevelt led 2-0 at one point Friday. Pinckney was in front 4-0 before the Bobcats stormed back. Ida led 9-2 before the Bobcats scored seven runs to tie the game. It ended in a tie due to the pre-determined time limit placed on all games.

“We’re not perfect in any way, and we know it,” Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt said. “But if we make a mistake, we recover and compete.”

Ava Stevens, Bailey Spradling, Brooklyn Mills, and Peyton Welch all batted over .400 for the weekend. Welch earned three wins and Stevens earned one.  Welch struck out 21 in 15 innings pitched.

Whiteford, which clinched no worse than a share of the TCC title last week, will try for the outright league championship against Sand Creek Wednesday.
