IDA – There were no kickoffs, no band and no cheerleaders, but high school football season is back. And, Thursday evening at Ida High School, the 2017 version of the Whiteford Bobcat varsity and junior varsity teams made their debut at a four-team scrimmage.
The Bobcats certainly made an impression, from scoring a touchdown on the first play against Airport to multiple scores against 2015 state semifinalist Ida. Whiteford also fared well against Grass Lake. The offense and defense each went 20 minutes against all three opponents, trying numerous combinations of players.
The Bobcats are coming off the best season in school history, winning its first 13 games of the season and playing at Ford Field in Detroit in the Division 8 MHSAA championship game. Several seniors graduated, but the 2017 team has a heavy list of returning starters on its 28-player roster. The varsity Bobcats expect to have 14 juniors and 14 seniors when the season starts.
“I’m happy with how hard our players competed in our scrimmage,” said sixth-year Whiteford head coach Jason Mensing. “We have a lot of refinement still to do. We need to improve our ball security, passing game and our pad level.”
The Bobcats have just a week to make those refinements. The season begins Thursday, August 24 at 6 p.m. at home against Blissfield for the Bobcat JV team and at 7 p.m. Friday, August 25 for the varsity on the road against Blissfield.
