Second quarter keys Rice’s 500th career victory

By DOUG DONNELLY

PETERSBURG – Whiteford boys basketball coach John Rice reached a milestone and his Bobcat basketball team remained atop the TCC Tuesday.

Rice won his 500th career game as a varsity boys basketball coach, including No. 447 as coach of the Bobcats.

“It’s nice to accomplish this for all of the players that played for me,” Rice said. “There have been a lot of great players to come through Whiteford and I’m fortunate to have coached them.”

The Bobcats needed a big second quarter to pull away from the Bulldogs, who were without its leading scorer and lost its second-leading scorer for a few minutes in the second quarter when he had to exit the game because he was bleeding.

Whiteford led 18-16 on the strength of Antonio DiTerlizzi’s turnaround jumper from the foul line to close out the first quarter. It then reeled off 12 straight points before Summerfield scored on two free throws, and closed the quarter with seven more points – including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Thomas Eitniear.

The Bulldogs went nearly 10 minutes without a field goal during that stretch. An 8-0 Summerfield run cut the lead to 38-26 with 6:38 left in the third quarter, but a Cameron Iott free throw, a Jared Fink 3-pointer and triple by Hunter Lake put the Bobcats back up 46-26 with 2:31 left in the third quarter.

Summerfield scored the final five points of the game to close the gap, but still lost for the second time in the TCC this season.

Whiteford, meanwhile, is 8-2 overall and alone atop the TCC standings with a 6-0 league mark. Sand Creek is a game back at 5-1.

Hunter Lake led the Bobcats with 17 points Tuesday. DiTerlizzi scored 10 points while Iott and Fink each chipped in with 8. Eitniear finished with six and Matthew Taylor five.

Whiteford will host Britton Deerfield Friday, the same night the school hosts its annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Rice, who is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame, has coached the Bobcats for 33 seasons and has 447 wins as the head varsity boys coach at Whiteford. He’s in his 40th season overall as a head coach and now has 500 career victories.
