Bobcats take care of business, clinch at least share of TCC

Whiteford’s boys basketball team clinched its ninth all-time TCC boys basketball championship Friday with a dominating, 82-60 win over the defending league champions Sand Creek Aggies.

The Bobcats jumped out to a big early lead, forcing two Sand Creek timeouts in the first quarter, led 27-14 after one quarter and 46-23 at halftime.

Thomas Eitniear scored 28 points, Jared Fink and Cameron Iott 14 points apiece and Hunter Lake added 11. Matthew Taylor scored eight points and had a big game rebounding as well.

Whiteford is 11-0 in the TCC, three games ahead of Summerfield, who beat Whitmore Lake Friday and is 8-3 in the league. Sand Creek is 8-4 in the TCC.

The Bobcats will host Summerfield Tuesday with a shot to clinch the outright league title. However, the Bobcats will have to do it without head coach John Rice, who was ejected from Friday’s game for picking up two technical fouls.

The Bobcats also have a league game remaining against Britton Deerfield and a game vs. Morenci that was canceled earlier this year with no make-up date set so far.

Whiteford’s last TCC boys basketball title came in 2012 when the Bobcats were coached by Jim Ross. The other eight league titles have come under Rice, who coached the Bobcats to TCC championships in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1988, 1989, 2003 and now 2018. Rice is tied with Charlie Risner for the most TCC boys basketball championships.
