District basketball is here.
The Whiteford Bobcats will open the 2019 boys basketball state tournament Monday, Feb. 25, when the 6-14 Bobcats take on 7-13 Clinton at Blissfield.
All tickets are $6 and on sale at the door. The Bobcat-Redskin game will be at 5:30 with tournament host Blissfield taking on Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in the second game.
The Bobcats enter district play having lost four consecutive games, including one to Clinton. Whiteford lost to Clinton 69-65 in December and 53-47 Feb. 18.
Hunter Lake leads Bobcat scorers with a 19.2-points-per-game average. He needs 9 points to reach 850 for his career. He is one of six seniors on the Bobcat team.
The two teams with the best records will be looking to end long district droughts while SMCC would like to extend their district streak. Erie Mason awaits the winner of Whiteford-Clinton on Wednesday while Summerfield got the bye on the other side of the bracket and will face the SMCC-Blissfield survivor.
It’s a loaded District. Clinton has won just seven games but one of those wins was a 25-point victory over No. 9 Quincy. Blissfield beat Summerfield last week while Erie Mason knocked off Summerfield after the Bulldogs had won its first 15 games. Mason has the most dangerous scorer in the district in Joe Liedel, who is coming off a 51-point game and carries a 28.4 points per game average into the post season.
SMCC head coach Randy Windham called Blissfield potentially the most dangerous team in the district.
“They’ve had some really, really good moments,” he said. “Erie Mason is probably the best team in our region this year as far as what they are able to do all-around. We’re not looking ahead to anybody. Blissfield is on our radar. They are really good.”
