Whiteford will tip-off its 2019-20 basketball season Tuesday when it hosts Blissfield.
Here’s a preview of the two teams:
Whiteford
2018-19: 11-9 (10-4 TCC)
Coach: Les Manley, 5th year, 40-43
Returning starters: Junior Paige Thomas (5-3)
Other returning players: Senior Natalia DiTerlizzi (5-5) and sophomore Kinzie Kohler (5-7).
Newcomers: Juniors Emma Spradling (5-6), Ali Schober (5-1) and Emma Olrich (5-2); Sophomore Zoe Bauman (5-8); Freshmen Madelyn Thomas (5-1) and Jessica Ulery (5-6).
League: Tri-County Conference.
Outlook: Whiteford lost six seniors from last season’s team and will build around Thomas (3.9 ppg) and Kohler (4.6 ppg).
Coach’s comment: “We are a very young team that will play with a lot of heart and are very competitive. We will try to continuously get better every day and finish in the top half of the TCC.”
First game: Tuesday vs. Blissfield
Blissfield
2018-19: 12-8 (9-5 LCAA)
Coach: Ryan Gilbert, 12th season, 172-67
Returning starters: Seniors Courtney Mason (5-9) and Elizabeth Milner (5-5); Juniors Morgan Case (5-9) and Kara Stutzman (5-7).
Other returning players: Seniors Makenna Ricker (5-6) and Elizabeth Keller (5-8) and junior Kylee Noel (5-7).
Newcomers: Juniors Brianna Ford (5-6), Abby Madalinski (5-7), Kyle Ryan (5-5) and Sophie Meyer (5-4).
League: Lenawee County Athletic Association
Outlook: The Royals are hopeful that Milner can come back from a knee injury sometime in January. Stutzman averaged 13.8 points a game last year and made 48 3-pointers.
Coach’s comment: “We are hoping to lean on our experience this season to compete in a strong LCAA conference, stay healthy, and be playing our best basketball come March.”
