ERIE — The Whiteford Bobcats will try and upset the No. 2 seeded Erie Mason Eagles tonight in the first round of the Division 3 boys basketball tournament at Erie Mason.
The Bobcats finished the regular season 2-18 while the Eagles went 17-3 and won the Lenawee County Athletic Association championship.
The Eagles are led by Joey Liedel, a senior who carries a scoring average of above 30.0 points a game into the contest.
There’s a lot of intrigue in this district, including the size of Mason’s gym, which seats 1,100. School officials have already announced that Wednesday’s doubleheader will be split into two sessions. The gym will be cleared after the Mason-Whiteford winner takes on Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central and prior to the Blissfield-Summerfield matchup.
Summerfield’s only loss was to Blissfield. Blissfield and Mason split their regular season meetings. The host Eagles haven’t beaten Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central since it was Monroe Catholic Central and that was 1973.
In addition to some outstanding teams, this district has some great individual players as well. Blissfield’s Ty Wyman is a 1,000-point scorer while Summerfield’s Brendan Dafoe has scored more than 900 points in his four-year career.
Mason’s Liedel tops them both. Liedel has scored 2,148 career points and is moving up the ladder on the state’s all-time 3-pointers made list with 326.
According to the most recent Michigan High School Athletic Association record book update, Liedel ranks among the top 20 scorers in state history and is second all-time in 3-pointers made. He recently passed Lenawee Christian’s Brad Gray who made 314 triples in his Cougar career. The state record is 340.
