Whiteford will get its fall sports season started Tuesday when the Bobcats host the Nick Haynes Memorial Invitational at Whiteford Stoneco Community Park.
Jay Yockey is in his first year coaching the Whiteford cross country teams. He’s a former Adrian College runner and Britton Deerfield head coach.
The Bobcat girls’ runners include seniors Sarah Oberle (pictured above from the 2019 track season) and Josie Emerson along with freshman Annie Gapp but lack enough girls to fill out a complete roster. Should volleyball not be allowed to continue this fall, Yockey might pick up some runners.
“These girls play off each other very well and push each other,” Yockey said. “If we don’t have a full team, it will come down to individual efforts.”
The boys are led by juniors Nick Oberle, Ryan Oberle and Luke Murphy; sophomore Elliot Rodgers and freshman Keegan Masters.
“They have a lot of potential to do well as a team,” Yockey said. “We’re going into the TCC (Tri-County Conference) as a darkhorse. We’re not expected to do much. I think we can surprise some people.”
