BRITTON — Whiteford’s Cole Giesige stepped in at quarterback for the first time in his career Friday but his biggest play came on defense as his interception on the final seconds helped the Bobcats secure a 22-20 win over Britton Deerfield.
Giesige rushed 19 times for 70 yards and completed 7 of his 9 passes for 53 yards and a touchdown and Devon Shaw added a third quarter touchdown for the Bobcats. It was Shaw’s 2-yard run that put Whiteford up 22-12 late in the third quarter.
BD came back, however, scoring with 7:48 left to pull within 22-20, then getting the ball back and driving into the Whiteford 33-yard line. With five seconds left, Giesige grabbed an interception just outside the goal line, giving the Bobcats the ball back.
On the ensuing snap, Giesige took the ball and ran in the end zone for a safety, making the final score 22-20, and giving the Bobcats the victory.
Freshman Jake Iott rushed 17 times for 94 yards while Shaw had 28 yards on 16 carries.
BD outgained Whiteford, 276-245.
Nick Freeman led the Whiteford defense with seven tackles.
