Whiteford falls in District final to Summerfield, 34-14, closing season at 6-3

OTTAWA LAKE – The Whiteford Bobcats closed its season Friday with a third-round loss in the state playoffs to Summerfield, 34-14.

Summerfield shut out Whiteford in the second half and forced three third quarter turnovers to thwart any attempt the Bobcats had in coming back.

“I think the moment may have been too big for our kids,” Whiteford coach Jason Mensing said. “But I’m proud of them for the way they played, the way they overcame adversity and got here to this point.

“Give credit to Summerfield. They came out and played fast and played well.”

Shea Ruddy completed 12 of 22 passes for 90 yards while Devon Shaw ran for 66 yards to lead the Bobcat offense. Levi Hillard was in on 10 tackles to lead the Bobcat defense.

Summerfield went up 14-0 with two first quarter touchdowns. Bulldog quarterback Devin Albain kept both drives going with key third-down and long passes to convert them into first downs.

After Ruddy scored to cut it to 14-6, Albain hit for two more touchdown passes to build a 28-6 Summerfield lead. Whiteford came back again, cutting it to 28-14 just before halftime on a short touchdown run by Ruddy on a fourth-and-goal with three seconds left in the half.

The Bobcats got the second half kickoff and had hoped to mount another scoring drive to make it a one-possession game, but Summerfield’s Drew Dafoe stepped in front of the Whiteford receiver for an interception, ending that drive. The Bobcats would turn the ball over three more times in the second half.

Summerfield advances to play the winner of Saturday’s Royal Oak Shrine vs. Clarkston Everest Collegiate district final. The Bulldogs are 4-5 on the season and have won three straight – all in the playoffs.

Whiteford’s season draws to a close at 6-3.

Mensing said despite all of the adversity, such as Covid-19, the Bobcats had a great and enjoyable season.

“Ultimately we had a season that was a nightmare in every way, and we were gifted with an unbelievable group of boys to coach,” he said.
