Bobcat boys open District play tonight

By DOUG DONNELLY

ADRIAN – Whiteford’s boys basketball team has spent the regular season learning how to win.

Now they have reached the post-season with a chance to do just that.

The Bobcats are part of a wide-open Division 3 District at Madison.

Whiteford will bring a 6-7 record into the district and face 5-7 Madison. The Bobcats beat the Trojans twice during the regular season – both times on last-second shots.

The Whiteford-Madison winner will face Tri-County Conference champion Erie Mason at 5:30 Thursday.

The championship will be at 7 p.m. Saturday.

“We feel very confident going into the district,” Bobcat coach Nick Abalos said. “We are playing well right now. The guys never give up. They are young, so every time we go out and play like that, they gain confidence. They never quit.”

Whiteford has two wins over Madison and one win over Sand Creek and Morenci. In the game against Erie Mason, the Bobcats led by double-digits early in the second half. The only team in the district that Whiteford hasn’t faced is Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central.

Whiteford’s last district title came in 2014.
