SAND CREEK – Whiteford put on an impressive pitching performance Wednesday and took two games from Sand Creek, putting the Bobcats firmly in front in the Tri-County Conference race.
The Bobcats took the opener 7-1 on a two-hitter, then won a three-inning game two, 16-0.
Lauren Keller, who pitched the Aggies past Whiteford the last time the two teams met, went seven innings in the opener, allowing nine hits and striking out two. She gave up just three earned runs.
The Aggies fell to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the TCC.
Whiteford is now 20-3 overall and 8-0 in the TCC. They have double headers remaining in league play against Morenci and Summerfield. Whiteford was ranked No. 7 in the most recent coaches’ association Division 4 poll.
Unity Nelson struck out 17 in the first game for Whiteford and Berlynn Keller pitched a perfect three innings with three strikeouts for the Bobcats in the second. Keller needed just 20 pitches in the second game to dispose of the Aggies.
“We could not hit tonight,” Aggie coach Marcia Randall said. “They had probably the best pitching we have seen this year.”
Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt was pleased with the Bobcats sweep.
“Sand Creek challenged us defensively in game one,” VanBrandt said. “Our players made the necessary adjustments. It was a great pair of road wins for us.”
Aly VanBrandt had two hits and three RBIs for the Bobcats in the first game. Nelson and Jillian Webb also had two hits. Keller went 3-for-3 in the second game with a pair of doubles and VanBrandt had a triple and three hits. Nelson, Ambrelle Billau and Anna VanBrandt had two hits apiece.
Sand Creek’s two hits on the night came from Alex Waltz, who had an RBI single in the first game, and Tanana Emmendorfer.
Sand Creek is in the Adrian Tournament Saturday.
