Whiteford finds game for Friday – will play at Edon, Ohio

By DOUG DONNELLY

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford has found a football game for Friday night.

The 3-0 Bobcats will play at Edon (Ohio) High School at 7 p.m. Friday.

It will be the first meeting ever between the two schools.

“We wanted our kids to play as they only get so many opportunities to do this in their lifetime,” Whiteford coach and athletic director Jason Mensing said. “We were talking with some other schools but some logistics with enrollment differentiation and other challenges could not be worked through. Fortunately, late Tuesday I received a contact from the athletic director at Edon that they were looking for a game, so we chatted and finalized things today.”

Whiteford was scheduled to play a Tri-County Conference game against Morenci on Friday, but that game was canceled due to Morenci’s low available numbers due to COVID-19 and contact tracing.

Whiteford is 3-0 so far this season and ranked among the top teams in Division 8.

The Bombers are 3-1 on the season and are averaging nearly 50 points a game. They opened the season with a 49-22 win over Edgerton, then beat Antwerp 41-26 and Hicksville 60-6. Last week the Bombers lost to Norwalk St. Paul, 45-44.

“We have just started our prep for Edon,” Mensing said. “Obviously this will be a difficult and quick turn-around for both teams. From what I see, they are an extremely talented and veteran team that is well coached who runs the air raid. Their passing offense will be the best we have seen this year and may see all year.”

Edon was scheduled to play Montpelier this week, but that game was canceled.

Edon was chosen as the Toledo Area Athletic Conference favorite this season in a preseason poll of league coaches.

The Bombers are a Division 7 school in Ohio, playing in Region 26. They are members of the Buckeye Border Conference but play football in the TAAC.

The Bombers went 6-4 last season and have nine starters back on offense and eight on defense. Quarterback Drew Gallehue (6-4, 220) has put up staggering statistics the last couple of seasons. In 2020, Gallehue completed 215 of 373 passes for 2,900 yards. He threw for more than 1,800 yards as a sophomore.

His top targets from a year ago are also back in Henley Dye (40 receptions for 517 yards), Hayden Dye (40 catches for 447 yards) and Ethan Steinke (30 catches for 477 yards).

Edon is a village in Williams County, Ohio, which is just a few miles from the Ohio-Indiana state line.

Because Whiteford found another game, Morenci will not have to forfeit and will remain 1-2 going into Week 4.

  1. I saw somewhere that Edon charges $10 for all sporting events. Can someone confirmed that it will take $10 per person to enter the game?
