DeBarr’s game-winner helps Bobcats overcome 14-point deficit

SAND CREEK – Whiteford trailed by as many as 14 points in the third quarter but went on a 13-0 run then got a game-winner from Hunter DeBarr inside the final six seconds.

Sand Creek went up 43-29 with 2:14 left in the third quarter on a bucket by Trevor Opel. The Aggies didn’t score again until the three-minute mark of the game.

Shea Ruddy started the rally with a bucket, then Evan Parker added two free throws. Luke Rasor hit back-to-back shots, the Parker scored on an offensive rebound and Rasor on a drive to the basket to make it 44-41.

The Bobcats forced a flurry of Sand Creek turnovers, leading to a Cole Gieisge drive to the basket. He was fouled, made the first free throw. On the second free throw, Parker grabbed the offensive rebound, kicked it out to Giesige who found Rasor cutting to the basket and Whiteford led 44-43.

The Aggies would go up again 45-44 and 47-46 with 1:35 left.

The two teams traded turnovers and missed shots until DeBarr hit a short jumper that circled around the rim before falling with 5.8 seconds to go in the game. The Aggies couldn’t get off a potential game-winner.

Rasor finished with 13 points and Giesige nine. Parker, in his first game back from an injury, provided a spark for the Bobcats and had six points. Ruddy, Isaiah Joerin and DeBarr had five points apiece.

The Bobcats improved to 8-4 overall and stayed tied atop the Tri-County Conference with Erie Mason with the victory. Whiteford is at Blissfield Thursday.

Whiteford held Sand Creek’s top scorer, Tylan Waltz, to 11 points. He came into the game averaging 24.0 points a game. He was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.
