OTTAWA LAKE – For the first time in school history, Whiteford will host a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 Regional track and field event.
“We are really excited to be able to host this event for our student athletes and the community,” Whiteford Athletic Director Jason Mensing said. “Our new track and field facility is the perfect place to bring together hundreds of athletes from this area to compete for medals and a trip to the state track and field meet.”
Details are still in the works, but Regionals this spring will be held May 21. Qualifiers will compete at the state finals on June 4.
“It will be a great not to travel somewhere to compete in a regional,” Whiteford varsity track coach Mike Hughe said. “But at the same time preparing to host so many schools will be fun and challenging at the same time. Our coaching staff is excited to showcase our school and our new track facilities.”
Planning has begun already to coordinate hosting the event.
“One of the coaches said it was his dream to host a regional meet,” Hughes said. “With the logistics of hosting, it will take coordination from the school, community, and surrounding area to host a great meet. With that being said, the Whiteford community always rises to the challenge.”
The Division 3 Regional will include Whiteford, Adrian Madison, Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard, Ann Arbor Greenhills, Blissfield, Dearborn Advanced Tech Academy, Dearborn Heights Robichaud, Detroit Cristo Rey, Detroit Leadership Academy, Detroit Voyageur College Prep, Ecorse, Erie Mason, Ida, Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, Sand Creek and Taylor Prep.
Whiteford’s new track and field facility opened last season and the Bobcats hosted their first dual meet event since 2008. The new track was funded as part of a 2019 bond issue. It replaces a cinder track that Whiteford had utilized since the 1970s when it was built.
