District basketball week begins Monday; Whiteford has first round bye

Erie Mason (15-5) and Whiteford (13-7) are the top two seeds in the Division 3 district at Sand Creek, but Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central is 12-8 and has won six of their last eight games.

SMCC opens against Sand Creek (2-18) with Madison (10-10) and Blissfield (9-11) playing in the second game Monday.

Erie Mason gets the SMCC-Sand Creek winner with Whiteford playing the Madison-Blissfield winner. The Bobcats have lost to both Madison and Blissfield this season.

“I think it’s a wide-open district,” Madison coach Erik Thompson said. “It all depends on who can get hot at the right time.”

Blissfield head coach Gary Sullivan said it doesn’t hurt to have a little luck this time of the year.

“Several teams have a legitimate chance of winning it,” he said. “A little luck can go a long way.”
