OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford’s softball team got the season started off right by sweeping Blissfield in a non-conference doubleheader to open the 2022 season.
Whiteford won by scores of 10-0 and 5-1.
Unity Nelson threw a no-hitter in five innings of work and struck out 13 in the opener. Berlynn Keller worked the second game, striking out seven and picking up the victory.
Aly VanBrandt reached base all five times she was at-bat, including a triple. Patrina Marsh and Ambrelle Billau each had a double. Marsh and Nelson had three hits apiece on the day.
“It was a great first day for us and we were a little lucky with the weather,” Bobcat coach Matt VanBrandt said. “It poured for about 15 minutes and saturated the field, but our grounds crew was able to get it ready after about a 30-minute delay. Both teams were happy to get some games in before break.”
Whiteford is off until after their spring break, when they play at Tecumseh on Monday, April 11. Whiteford will play at Toledo St. Ursula on Tuesday April 12.
