Week 4! Whiteford travels to Madison to take on the 1-2 Trojans

The No. 1 ranked Whiteford Bobcats will take on the Madison Trojans tonight in the final Tri-County Conference meeting between the two schools.

Madison, a charter member of the TCC, will leave the league after 50 years following the 2022-23 school year to join the Lenawee County Athletic Association.

Madison head coach Scott Gallagher said the move from the TCC to the LCAA is not for concern for this year’s squad.

“We’re excited to be part of this game,” he said. “We are not focused on next year at all. We don’t talk about the LCAA. That has nothing to do with what we want to accomplish this year.”

Gallagher has been part of three TCC schools. He graduated from Morenci, where he was a three-sport athlete, and also coached at Sand Creek before coming to Madison a year ago to take over the Trojan football program.

He said the backyard rivalries and games that often pit cousins against cousins is what he’s always loved about the league.

“As a player, we knew all of the kids from the other schools,” he said. “You compete with them in several sports, you see them at the (Lenawee County) fair and you get to know them. In some cases, you are playing against them from middle school on up to the varsity. It’s a fun league.”

Tonight’s game features one of the few times a TCC team has been on top of the Associated Press poll. The Bobcats were No. 1 this week in the first AP weekly poll of the season.

“This is a big game, our conference opener,” Bobcat coach Todd Thieken said.

The Bobcats come into the game fresh off a 52-14 win over Detroit Loyola. In that game the Bobcats scored on its first seven offensive possessions of the game an an impressive showing against a team many had on the short list of Division 7 teams that could make a deep playoff run.

Whiteford holds a 43-4 all-time advantage in the series against Madison. The series began in 1971 when the two schools were members of the River Raisin Conference. The first meeting as TCC foes was in 1975.
