Whiteford splits doubleheader with Trenton as Nelson pitches no-hitter again

TRENTON – Whiteford’s Unity Nelson threw her third consecutive no-hitter as Whiteford beat Trenton 3-0 in game 1 of a doubleheader Monday.

Trenton, the Division 2 runner-up a year ago, came back to win the nightcap 5-4.

Nelson struck out 15 in the opener. Aly VanBrandt and Shay Alexander had two hits each.

In game 2, Kayde Sheldon had two hits and two RBIs. The Bobcats had the bases loaded, trailing by one, when Trenton recorded the final out.

“It was a great night for us,” Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt said. “Nelson pounded the strike zone again and continues to improve her command. The outcome for game two was not in our favor, but we battled until the last out and our energy was outstanding – especially in that last inning.”

Whiteford is 24-3 overall and 8-0 in the TCC.
