Whiteford’s 2-1 football team, still ranked among the top 10 Division 7 teams in Michigan by multiple polls and rankings, faces a stiff test tonight when the Bobcats cross the border to play Edon, Ohio.
The Bombers are 4-0 and averaging 45 points a game.
“Bob (Elwin, Edon coach) has been running that offense for 25 years and does a great job at it,” Whiteford coach Todd Thieken said of Edon. “Their quarterback probably has thrown for more yards already this season in four games than we will all season. They have really good receivers and skilled guys.”
Elwin has coached a dozen All-Ohio quarterbacks in his decades of coaching. This is his fifth year at Edon. The Bombers are 33-17 in his tenure.
Thieken said the Bobcats will need to keep their offense on the field in order to keep the Bombers offense off it.
“Literally, our focus, is to just get first downs,” he said. “We need to get first downs, control the clock and not have an off possession because they can score on any play. We can’t get into a situation where we are chasing points against a team like that.”
Whiteford is coming off a 44-16 win over Buchanan, a Division 6 school from the west side of Michigan. The Bobcats are 2-1 on the season, with its only loss coming to Division 6 Ida.
Sophomore quarterback Tre Eitniear leads the Bobcat offense with 280 yards passing and four touchdowns to four different receivers in three games. He’s also scored six rushing touchdowns.
Brek Ruddy leads the Bobcat running backs with 312 yards. He’s rushed for at least 100 yards in two consecutive games.
NOTES:
Edon is one of three teams on the Whiteford schedule still unbeaten. Edon is 4-0, Clarkston Everest Collegiate is 3-0 (Week 7 opponent) and White Pigeon (Week 8 opponent) is 3-0.
