MORENCI – Logan Murphy scored four times and Thomas Eitniear twice as the Whiteford Bobcats rolled to a 51-8 win over Morenci, clinching a spot in Michigan’s playoffs.
The Bobcats are 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Tri-County Conference. They were tied atop the TCC with Morenci at 3-0 entering the game, but put it away early with 22 first-quarter points.
Murphy scored on the third play of the game for the Bobcats on a 67-yard run and added two scores in the second quarter and one in the third. He rushed for 127 yards in the game on 14 carries.
“They are a good team,” Morenci coach Jacob Bovee said. “They have a lot of weapons. You take something away from them, and they have someone else to get the job done.”
Eitniear scored on runs of 4 and 53 yards while Zach Bertz added a TD as well for Whiteford. The Bobcats rushed for 372 yards and Eitniear threw for 107. On his second rushing TD, he had dropped back to pass, but saw an opening and hit it, racing in between two Bulldog defenders to get to the end zone. As a starter, Eitniear is now 29-4 at QB for the Bobcats over the past three seasons.
Bryce Wing, Deshawn Williams and Ty Eitniear recovered fumbles for the Bobcats while Abba Risley made eight tackles for the Whiteford defense.
Murphy now has 823 yards rushing on the season and averages 13.5 yards per carry. He’s scored 12 touchdowns.
Luke Grieder scored on a 70-yard run for Morenci while Chase VanBrandt was in on 14 tackles for the Bulldogs (3-3, 3-1 in TCC). Morenci entered the game having won three straight.
With the playoff berth clinched, the Bobcats have now qualified for the post-season a school-best six consecutive seasons under head coach Jason Mensing, who earlier this week was named the Farm Bureau Insurance/Detroit Lions High School Football Coach of the Week.
