Bobcats advance in state tournament by beating Britton Deerfield

OTTAWA LAKE – Once the Whiteford Bobcats were off and running, they were off and winning.

The Bobcats beat Britton Deerfield, 50-38, on Monday in the opening round of the Class C District tournament. It marked the final coaching night for John Rice in the Whiteford High School gym. The longtime Bobcat coach announced earlier this season that this, his 33rd at Whiteford, would be his last.

BD came to spoil the party, taking a 12-11 lead with a buzzer-beater to end the first quarter. Whiteford battled to take a 20-17 lead into the locker room but came out firing, going on an 11-2 run to open the third quarter and build an advantage over the Patriots.

Hunter Lake got things going with a fast break layup to make it 22-17, then added another quick layup seconds later. BD’s Zac Clark scored to make it 24-19, but a Lake jumper Thomas Eitniear bucket and Cameron Iott layup after a nice rebound and outlet pass from Antonio DiTerlizzi gave the Bobcats a 30-19 lead. The margin was 18 points midway through the fourth quarter.

Eitniear led the Bobcats with 14 points while Lake scored 12. Iott finished with nine.

It was the first home district game in Whiteford boys basketball history.

The win was No. 17 on the year for Whiteford, who will travel to Blissfield Wednesday to take on Summerfield for a third time this season. No. 1 ranked Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central (20-0) will play Erie Mason (11-9) in the other semifinal. Whiteford has won 14 straight games.

SMCC advanced to Wednesday by beating Blissfield 61-49 Monday while Summerfield got past Madison, 46-39.
