OTTAWA LAKE – Devon Shaw started out as a basketball player. But, at some point along the way, football became his love.
Shaw, a Whiteford senior, made a commitment late last week to attend Adrian College and play college football.
“My brother (D’Ondre) got me started in football and I’ve loved it ever since,” Shaw said after the signing ceremony in front of his family, friends and Whiteford head varsity football coach Jason Mensing. “He paved the way for me. I knew I wanted to play in college.”
Shaw was recruited as a running back by the Bulldog coaching staff. Adrian College is a Division 3 college with state-of-the-art athletic facilities on a campus of around 1,600 students. That was one of the things that attracted Shaw.
“It felt a lot like home,” Shaw said of his campus visit. “It is a small school, very close. I liked how it felt being there.”
Shaw had an outstanding career at Whiteford. As a freshman the Bobcats won the Division 8 state championship. He became a starting linebacker as a sophomore and has started at running back for the past two seasons.
Shaw rushed for 961 yards last season and led Whiteford in scoring with 15 rushing touchdowns. He also had 49 receiving yards, giving him more than 1,000 yards of total offense. He set a single-game Whiteford record with 40 carries in the game against Summerfield and had a career-high 215 yards rushing against Pittsford.
In a three-game stretch late in the season, Shaw carried the ball 89 times for 418 yards and 10 touchdowns as Whiteford made a run to the Division 8 district finals and finished 6-3.
Shaw finished fourth in the Monroe County Region in rushing yards. He was named First Team All-Tri-County Conference, All-Region and honorable mention All-State.
Shaw said he talked to a lot of people with connections to Adrian College and loved what he heard about the school and the football program.
“Coach Mensing played there, the coach that recruited me (Homer Bailey) seemed like a great guy and I heard a lot of good things about the school,” Shaw said. “It reminds me a lot of Whiteford to be honest. And, its close to home. That was a important to me.”
Shaw said he is excited to get a shot at playing running back in college.
“I love the position,” Shaw said. “I know it. I’m really looking forward to it.”
