Whiteford succumbs to Erie Mason fourth quarter rally

SAND CREEK – Whiteford’s best season in four years came to a close Friday with a 55-43 loss to Erie Mason in the district championship game.

The 14-8 Bobcats led 34-31 with 7:08 remaining in the game but the TCC champion Eagles went on a 14-2 run to seize control of the game late.

Erie Mason jumped out to a 7-0 lead and were up 12-3 before Cole Giesige connected on a field goal to pull Whiteford within 12-5 with 49 seconds left in the first quarter.

Whiteford carried that momentum in the second quarter and took an 18-16 lead on a triple by Josh Hill with 2:09 left before halftime and led 21-20 at the break.

In the third quarter Whiteford gave up the lead but got it back on a Giesige bucket to make it 32-29. Shea Ruddy scored on an offensive rebound to open the fourth quarter and the Bobcats led 34-31 before Alex Langenderfer hit a three and then scored on a short jumper to put Mason up 36-34 at the 6:24 mark. The Eagles closed out the game by spreading out the floor and made free throws down the stretch.

“Giesige was a beast,” Erie Mason coach Kevin Skaggs said. “Whiteford played tremendously.”

Giesige scored 19 points and Luke Rasor eight for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats finished 14-8, the most wins for the team since 2017-18. Three of those losses came to Erie Mason (17-5).

Whiteford has four seniors on its roster – including starters Giesige, Jack Andrews and Isaiah Joerin plus Caleb Willis.
