OTTAWA LAKE — Whiteford lost for the first time this season Thursday, losing 2-1 to Milan in nine innings.
Milan sophomore pitcher Mariah Stines struck out 15 Bobcats and gave up just four hits. Unity Nelson struck out 16 Big Reds and held Milan off the scoreboard until the seventh inning when they tied the game.
“It was a great game that featured outstanding pitching, and we learned a lot about our team tonight,” Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt said. ” Milan is well-coached, and their hitters put more balls in play than we have seen in any other game. Our team loves to compete and we will learn from the mistakes we made.”
Whiteford scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning on an Aly VanBrandt single, an Ambrelle Billau sacrifice bunt, and then an RBI single from Patrina Marsh.
