OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford closed the doors on its gymnasium with a 80-59 win over Jefferson Tuesday.
Whiteford, which will move into a new gymnasium next season, has played in the same gym since 1958, the second season of varsity basketball.
“I challenged the guys before the game,” Whiteford Head Coach Nick Abalos said. “It was important to go out with a win here. The first game here (1958) was a win and we wanted the last one to be a win. There have been a lot of legends play here. It’s an important place.”
Tuesday’s win was led by Kolby Masserant, who scored 24 points off the bench, and senior Luke Rasor, who finished with 19.
The other senior on the Whiteford roster, Shea Ruddy, also reached double figures with 10 points.
The Bobcats lost on Friday to Erie Mason on a last second shot, but showed no effects from that loss, scoring 26 points in the opening quarter Tuesday.
“It was good for us to bounce back from Friday’s loss,” Abalos said. “The season is not over. We are going into a district that we know we can compete in.”
The 15-7 Bobcats will take on Ypsilanti Arbor Prep in the Division 3 District semifinal at Erie Mason next week.
